Verify a credential

Any employer, payer, contracting officer or member of the public may confirm whether a CFPO credential is current. No account is needed, and the holder is not notified.

What the registry returns

The registry returns the holder's name, credential status — Current, Expired, Suspended or Revoked — the issue date and the expiry date. It does not return examination scores, contact details, employer, or any other personal information. A revocation stays in the registry, with its effective date, so that a revoked credential cannot be presented as merely lapsed.

A holder's name in the registry is the legal name on the application. A holder may ask CIFPO to display a different name only with legal evidence of the change.

For employers and contracting parties

Verify before relying on the credential, and verify again at renewal time: a credential is current for two years from issue, and the registry is the only authoritative statement of its status. A certificate, a badge, or a line on a résumé is a claim; the registry is the record.

If you want to ask for the credential in a role description, this wording is accurate and does not overstate what CFPO asserts:

Preferred: Certified in Federal Payer Operations (CFPO), issued by CIFPO and verifiable at cifpo.org/verify. CFPO evidences measured knowledge of VA Community Care, TRICARE and CHAMPVA referral, authorization, documentation and denial-management operations. Candidates without the credential remain eligible for this role.

Do not describe CFPO as a license, a government requirement, or an accreditation. It is none of those, and a holder who lets an employer describe it that way is in breach of the code of ethics.

If a lookup fails

An identifier that returns no record was either mistyped or never issued. If a person has presented that identifier as a CFPO credential, report it. CIFPO investigates every report of misuse of the credential or the CIFPO name, and a substantiated misuse by a non-holder is referred, where the facts warrant it, to the relevant licensing board or employer.

Digital badge

Holders receive a digital badge that links to their registry entry. The badge is a convenience; the registry entry it points to is what an employer should rely on.
